Dyslexia Education: Understanding the Basics

What Is Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a neurological difference that affects the way the brain processes written language. Children with dyslexia are often bright, creative, curious, and deeply intelligent. Their difficulty is not with thinking. It is with decoding, spelling, and connecting letters to sounds. Dyslexia is lifelong, but it is highly responsive to structured, evidence-based instruction.

Recognizing the Signs:
Early signs may include: 

Reading delays 

Difficulty connecting sounds to letters 

Reversals or letter confusion 

Inconsistent spelling 

Difficulty memorizing sight words 

Slow or effortful reading 

Avoiding reading out loud 

High creativity paired with reading frustration

No two children present exactly the same way, which is why awareness and training are essential.

How Dyslexia is Treated: The most effective approach is structured literacy, a method grounded in explicit, systematic instruction that teaches the structure of language, phonological awareness, decoding skills, and reading fluency. New Mexico requires schools to provide such systematic, phonics-based instruction. But even then, despite excellent instruction, some children will fail to thrive due to severe dyslexia. Academic Language Therapists (aka dyslexia specialists) are trained to provide a multisensory, structured literacy approach that is geared to the individual needs of students who fail to respond to research-based classroom instruction. How to Support a Child You Suspect Has Dyslexia: If a child struggles with early reading and spelling skills but appears bright, curious, and capable in other areas, early evaluation can make all the difference. Families can support young readers by creating a nurturing environment that emphasizes patience, encouragement, and daily reading exposure. Intervention should be joyful, consistent, and tailored to the child’s needs. Children thrive when they feel seen and supported rather than pushed or compared to peers.

Why Early Detection Matters: The earlier dyslexia is recognized, the faster a child gains confidence and mastery. A critical window for intervention when children fail to thrive is in the early primary grades. Early support prevents reading struggles from becoming emotional wounds.
